Mark Arts is pleased to work with Dean Mitchell as the juror of awards for the National Watercolor Exhibition.


Dean L. Mitchell was born 1957, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and raised in Quincy, Florida.  He is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio.  Mitchell is well known for his figurative works, landscapes and still life’s.  In addition to watercolors, he is accomplished in other mediums, including egg temperas, oils, and pastels.

He has received the American Watercolor Society Gold Medal, Allied Artist of American Gold Medal in Watercolor and Oil, Thomas Moran Award from the Salmagundi Club in New York, Remington Professional League, and for three years in a row the Best in Show Award from the Mississippi Watercolor Society Grand National Competition.  In 2004 and 2007, he received the Autry National Center Award for Watercolor at the Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and sale.  Mitchell is a member of several professional societies, including the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society.

His art can be found in corporate and museum collections across the country, including Huntsville Museum of Art, Huntsville, Alabama; The Rockwell Museum, Corning, New York; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri; Mississippi Museum of Art, Jackson, Mississippi; Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis, Missouri; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, Missouri; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, Missouri; Beach Museum of Art, Manhattan, Kansas; The Autry National Center, Los Angeles; The Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock, Arkansas; Gadsden Art Center Quincy, Florida; Canton Museum of Art, Canton, Ohio and the Library of Congress.

Mitchell has been featured in numerous publications, including the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, American Artist, Artist Magazine, Fine Art International, and Art News.


Only original paintings in water media on paper are acceptable. No computer-generated images accepted. Your source material must be your own design or your own photograph. Prints, copies, photolithographic or computer-generated artwork are not eligible. Collage elements must be less than 10% and comprised of water media on paper. Minimum image size is 8 x 10 inches.


The exhibition is open to all artists living and working in the United States, both amateur and professional. Work must be ready to exhibit, created in the past three years, and not previously exhibited in a Mark Arts exhibition. Each entry must be wholly designed and executed by the artist. All artwork must be display ready with display hardware included. All work should be framed and matted and glazed, preferably with Plexiglas, for all entries. Each artist may enter up to four pieces. All artwork must be for sale.


Mark Arts is proud to offer enticing cash awards to attract leading artists from across the country.
$3,000 in Cash Awards will be awarded and numerous Patron Purchase Awards are anticipated. 


Mark Arts publishes an illustrated catalog with all accepted entries. A complimentary copy will be mailed to each entrant. 


Each artist may enter up to two (2) artworks for the basic fee of $30, and any additional image is $5 (4 max). The entry fee is nonrefundable. You may pay on-line with a credit card or via PayPal. Checks and money orders must be made payable to Mark Arts. Mark Arts is not responsible for the loss or damage to any submitted materials. Mark Arts will retain submitted images as part of its exhibition records.

September 24                   Deadline for receipt of shipped artwork

October 7                          Opening Reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. with remarks

December 10                    Exhibition closes

December 13-17               Hand-delivered artwork picked up

December 20                    Shipped artwork returned



All artworks must be available for sale. A 40% commission is charged on all sales and patron purchase awards from this exhibition. The artist is responsible for including this commission in the price stated on the entry form. Sales tax will be added to the price of the work when it is sold. All entries will be judged from digital images (JPG format). If upon delivery, an accepted artwork is found to have been misrepresented it may be disqualified. Award winners will be selected by the juror and all decisions are final. Patron Purchase Awards are selected by the individual patrons or their representatives.



Selected artworks for exhibition may be shipped or hand-delivered to Mark Arts. All works must be received no later than September 24, 2022. The artist is responsible for all shipping costs and in-transit insurance to and from Mark Arts. Shipped artwork must be sent prepaid in substantial, reusable containers. Instructions and payment for return shipping and a self-addressed shipping label should accompany the delivered artwork. (Prepaid UPS or FedEx label for return shipping is required.) Hand delivered artwork may be brought directly to Mark Arts, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Please note that Mark Arts is closed on Sundays and Mondays. While every care will be exercised in the handling of all works submitted, Mark Arts cannot assume liability for any loss of or damage to artwork in transportation or otherwise.
